Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard has been on my TBR this month, July 2015. This 388 pages book drives me crazy than I thought and I enjoyed it! After reading Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen, on my way home, I started reading Red Queen. I never expected something about this book. I just grabbed it from the pile of books that I have and that’s it, I thought, “This book will be the next book I’m going to read after Flipped.”, Okay. That was incredible.
I didn’t put the book down! I was like flipping pages by pages, continuously, diving myself into another beautiful world. World of silvers and red, the world of fantasy, a world of everything I wish I was into. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard is a dystopian fantasy novel, whereas the protagonist, Mare Barrow, a red-blooded, a thief who in one-day devastation takes place in her life.
A best friend bound to be an apprentice, Kilorn, has conscripted (Conscription and conscripted – terms that have been used in the book when an individual reaches a certain age without an apprenticeship to work for the government in wars.) Kilorn, knowing depressing as it is, seeks help with Mare. And Mare as desperately she wanted Kilorn to live and to escape the cruelty, she asks her sister, Gisa, who is an apprentice in a fine silk shop – who made dresses and uniforms for Silvers. This amazing story lets me dives into a new world where people seek for equality, where people wish discrimination to vanish and to accept anyone for who they are. And this is where the real story starts. Mare’s life, from poverty, became luxurious.
A twist of fate turns her life into a new one. New her, new identity, new Mare. With a mix of furious battles, intensified feelings, unacceptable revelations and a story of full of lies, Red Queen is the book for everyone who loves adventures and changes. This book made me think that people really believe what they want to believe, especially when there is a basis, an evidence. What we forgot is the whole picture, what really happens and what the real story behind it. The compelling story deserves an attention and an audience.
Red Queen is a story of life, love, and betrayal. A story that we shouldn’t let pass, a story that should be told and share. You will see how a life of Mare changes, how she struggles living as a Silver when she is Red at heart. You will see who to love, who to hate and most of all who to trust. Because this book will tell all the lie it can tell. And believe me, it is shockingly good and surprisingly awesome.
Kilorn is a childhood friend who Mare saves but as things changing between them Kilorn decided to save Mare in a different way and Mare did not like it. And Honestly? Mare is frustrated because she sacrifices a lot for her family and for Kilorn in the first place.
Maven; I don’t know but this second prince knows how to act with Mare. He is too kind, too pure and too brave. He has the courage and the desire for a change. You will know him as the story goes and you wouldn’t like what will happen next. Believe me.
Lucas is one of the royal guards who escorts Mare with her schedules, he is the one who picks her during breakfast, training, luncheon, dinner – anything. I don’t know but Lucas is kind, he may never speak about it but he trusted Mare and believed in her – but be ready, your heart may get broken in the ending.
And lastly, Cal is the first prince who has the privilege and the heir to the throne. Cal was the one who changes Mare’s life. He was the one I will always root for Mare. He is born as a prince, soldier at heart and a silver blooded. He yields fire, he controls fire. He was destined to marry someone. Cal and Mare’s chemistry is there and when you have come to the part where they have a moment, you will want more – you will read more and it sucks that things will be different in ending. I’ll give you a hint; Cal’s soul is broken and you wouldn’t like it.
One of my favorite characters in the story is Julian – He is one of the instructors who teach Mare, he became a father figure to her when things deliberately change in her life. Julian may be a scientist, curious about what she is but he never fails to understand Mare. You will love him. Mare trusted him. For me, I want more of Julian’s session with Mare when I am reading their part. It feels soothing to have someone you never knew before but believes in you.
And one of my least favorite characters was Elara – She was the queen – the worst. She controls people using her powers, she can read minds, and she can wield your will into her will. Elara is the kind of queen that you will hate and pity. I wanted to know how she became like that, why did she become evil. Is it because of envy? Power? No one became like that just because they are pure evil, somehow, I believe that she is kind in the past and there’s a reason for who she is in the story. I wanted to know her story – her past.
Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard feels like The Selection by Kiera Cass meets Shatter Me Trilogy by Tahereh Mafi meets Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. You would love this book and you will crave for more! The title and the cover of the second book have been released! GLASS SWORD. And I can’t wait! This is seriously an anticipated book. And as for Victoria Aveyard writing style? I love it. It makes you read and read and read continuously, the thoughts, the storyline, the characters it all connects. It won’t make you put the book down. Trust me. Let me end this book blog by quoting one of the quotes in the book that will strike you hard and will never make you forget once you read the novel.
“Anyone can betray anyone.” – Victoria Aveyard, Red Queen
