Thank you || #TheThanksUGive

I am writing this to participate on The Thanks U Give, a bookish community thanksgiving celebration, hosted by Chaesing Faerytales and Stay Bookish. Stay awesome, guys!

Honestly? I don’t know what to write. I am just staring at my screen and looking at it thinking what could I be thankful for. Huge thanks to Hazel from Stay Bookish, after tweeting her that I don’t have any idea what to write and with her tweet, I realize that I met a lot of people along with my book blogging life. I’ve experienced a lot of things that I never thought I would, I learn to expand my limitations and extend my knowledge to the extent that it surprises even myself.

I will be thankful not just to Bookish Community but also to those people who shaped me, who are there for me and for those people who keeps on telling me that I could not do it. Without the positive outlook and without the negative perspective, I am not in here with you today. So, I’m warning you. I’m not just thanking the Bookish Community but I am also thanking those who are included in my personal life.

  • January 2: This is where I acquire a copy of Wandering Star by Romina Russell — how awesome is that?! I am really thankful to Romina, who keeps on believing on me as her fan, as a reader, as a friend, and as a blogger. I wouldn’t keep my blog if it wasn’t for her. Zodiac Universe is one of the major reasons why I started entering the book blogging world. I always wanted to support her and she’s always there supporting me — entertaining my enthusiasms. Thank you, Romina Russell! Keep on writing. I know you will write amazing stories. I would never ever doubt you.
  • January 9: This is the first time JM from Revelations of a Bookfreak and I plan out something for food and bookstore hopping! We decided to go to Fullybooked BGC. (or more like I forced him to go there because, yeah, it was on sale.) If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t meet Hazel from Stay Bookish for the first time! And now, I am one of her friends! I know this is our first real meeting. So, Thank you JM and Hazel for being good friends of mine.

  • January 19: My Brother Patrick and I first time being together in a concert! And It is ONE OK ROCK! I’m really thankful that we had each other’s back. Thank you, Patrick! It may not seem like it but this is one of our awesome nights, right?!

  • January 23: Florisa Capones, a member of Pinoy Book Freaks United, ask our members if we could donate books because she is organizing an event promoting reading and I am thankful to her because I was able to donate 100+ books that will have a new home and could change an individual’s life through literature. Thank you Florisa on your non-stop and consistent persistent to my introvert life. I really feel great that day that books might inspire people.

  • February 18: Thank you to Kristen Hunt for sending me a copy of her book, Blonde Eskimo! One of my favorite read this 2016. I really hope to read the sequel soon! It was diverse and unique in a way. It is kind of new. I miss you, Kristen! Thank you!
  • March 3: Thank you, Kim Holden! I won a signed copy of Gus by joining on your giveaway. I never thought that I would win that book but I did! You really made me happy those times because Gus is my favorite character among your book characters. He is simply amazing in a lot of ways and I could share his pain. Thank you for greeting me a Happy Birthday on that book! I love it.

  • March 6: #VictoriaAveyardinPH if I was not mistaken. Thank you to my own bookish community which is Pinoy Book Freaks United and Victoria Aveyard PH Street Team. Guys, if you were not there my life are not complete without sharing the same agony over Red Queen! Thank you for being there and being friends with me.

  • March 11: Mommy Jane and Daddy John are the two people who really ignite the traveler within me. They showed me the beauty of the Philippines. They mentor me on backpacking. They share their knowledge based on their experience and I wouldn’t be more happy to listen to their stories and apply them to real life. I am really thankful, grateful in a lot of ways to this two. They act like my second parents and I wouldn’t be happier to have them. Mommy Jane is always there for me to give advice and opinions on things. Sometimes we talk about painful books and cry over a death of a character or we just laugh out on everything or simply being contented on the silence of the presence of the two of us. Daddy John is a quiet person but I feel his happiness and concern all the time. I always find him mysterious but he is a simple person who loves to watch Aldub. And Yes, I do like Aldub too. #NoBashing Thanks to this two lovely person who influenced me in a really good and positive way.

  • April 18: This day I received a previous published ARC of Another Day by David Levithan with his greeting of “Happy Birthday” and it was signed by him. It seems I received his gift late, nevertheless, the thought that he sent it to me absolutely makes me happy. Thank you so much David Levithan for being an awesome author! Thank you!

Event Recap: Lauren Kate Booksigning with Harrison Gilbertson

The last 6th of November 2016, Lauren Kate visited the Philippines for the third time to promote her books and the upcoming movie, The Fallen Series, together with Harrison Gilbertson starring as Cam. I had the opportunity to attend and meet them in person. Huge thanks to National Bookstore for making this event a success!

  • Lauren Kate started greeting her fans with, “Salamat po.”
  • Harrison Gilbertson says, “Hello.”
  • LK: The Philippines to me was the first time I came out of the US. So, you guys are so special to me. I think, I see a lot of familiar faces from 5 years ago or 6 years ago. I’m thrilled to be here with Harrison and we are so excited about the movie.
  • She will work on her Tagalog terms on her fourth trip!
  • She’s been talking about her durian experience. Meaning? She loves Durians!
  • Harrison was asked about how was his experience in the Philippines, “HG: It’s been a great time. Thank you for coming out.”
  • LK: I’ve been very grateful to you, be friends with you guys and talk to you and feel your  enthusiasm for the whole series and particularly now with the movie.
  • “I would like to do it.”, Harrison’s stance on being bribed for a new iPhone for posting more.
  • “I’m going to try my best.”, Harrison said on being active on social media.
  • LK: I mean, the fact that Fallen was becoming a movie was exciting enough for me but the fact that Fallen is becoming really a good movie with really gorgeous people. I’m honored, I’m thrilled and I know you guys gonna love it.
  •  LK: I was an executive producer. So, I started with the script — with really a lot of work on the script, many different drafts and I was really excited to have a good relationship with the director… For people who like the books, you’ll go to find so much to enjoy the movie… it is a beautiful production. I’ve loved it.
  • LK: You are going to notice certain things that are in the book but not in a movie and couple of scenes from the movie and not in the book but that’s not anything that actually bothered me at all. I find it really enriching and exciting to see have the story take it new life. For me what was central was its essence. And there’s also a related chemistry between the actors and maybe this guy (points out to Harrison Gilbertson).
  • Harrison was asked, Do you always wanted to be an actor and why would you want to be an actor? HG: Yeah. I think, I’m always a crazy young child who loves funny stories and exaggerating over things in my life. I’m not going to do it today, rather. But yeah, I think the best for me is acting…
  • HG: You start creating this memory and you just go on and on and on and on. | He is talking about the back stories of the characters on The Fallen series pertaining to preparing his character as Cam on the movie.
  • Lauren Kate doesn’t really give pointers or trip to the actors. She thinks that everybody in the cast is really amazing portraying their characters. She’s amazed how the cast transformed.
  • She is very interested seeing a particular scene in a book — it is a date. She said that fans wouldn’t be disappointed!
  • Lauren Kate felt pretty nervous when she watched the movie and she feels being transported in the movie. She couldn’t put the experience into words.
  • Harrison said that it was fun in the set being with Jeremy and Addison and being friends with them while continuing your passion. He wishes to be part of the future Fallen movie.
  • Fallen Movie was one of the memorable for Harrison. He said that it was an amazing experience.
  • Lauren Kate doesn’t have a particular scene that she was attached to. The important was the chemistry and the essence of the movie being adapted from the book.
  • She said that reincarnation fascinated her and it feels like she was a Scottish soldier in middle ages and some deja vu. It was interesting for her on how people transcend bodies, fictionally.
  • Lauren Kate would want to go back for centuries in Jerusalem.
  • She didn’t think that Fallen would become this big. She has no idea that her book would have this success. She doesn’t know that she will go back to Manila and go to talk about the movie. She said that she’s not taking anything for granted.
  • LK: In some sense, it feels like being understood in some ways.
  • There’s an impact on writing being in connected with film-making.
  • Lauren Kate feels lucky. She is excited for us to see the movie and wishes that we would love the movie.
  • If she isn’t an author, she would be a Chef in her reincarnation. Her specialty would be Balut.
  • Harrison loves Carpentry School. If not an actor, he would be off in Carpentry School.
  • Harrison is confident on the movie. *That’s to get excited for!*
  • Lauren Kate feels pressured and confident both at the same time including the fact that the movie is now on Cinemas! She wishes that people would like it and the movie do well for the other books to put in the making.
  • Harrison is working on Behind the Glass in Canada that fans should watch out for!
  • Lauren is finishing a new book, another love story. Set in American Civil War. She still working on the title but she will share it as soon as she has it.
  • Lauren’s message to her fans: I’m honored to be here and Thank you so much for your support. You have been here and here’s for more.
  • Harrison’s message: Is it Salam – Salam, Salam? – Salamat.
  • The most challenging role for Harrison was Hault because they have to shoot in the cold. It started on to snow on the first day and he got too cold quickly. He said that all of his roles are fun.
  • Harrison said, “There’s nothing too challenging if you are having fun.”
  • One of the fans revealed her swooning over Harrison by saying, “So gwapo.”
  • Lauren’s inspiration with Cam is the devil was based on her husband.
  • Lauren said that when she watched Harrison’s audition tapes, she said that it was perfect.
  • She thinks that Cam is an extremely loyal person.
  • Given the chance of choosing the role of Gabriel and Cam, Harrison would still choose the role of Cam in the Fallen series.
  • Favorite reincarnation of Lauren is in the England scenes are really important for her because it is where everything started. That’s where she is discovering the characters of her characters. *did you get that?*
  • Apparently, a fan asked Harrison if he is single. Harrison’s response was a gesture of “be silent”, Lauren backed it up, “It’s complicated.”
  • Harrison was being shy after being asked and insisted on next question. *laughs*
  • Lauren Kate, “I feel like we could bottle the joy of Filipino people and we could pour it over to America right now because we really need it right now.””I was touched by the Filipino fans a lot of time.”
  • Harrison prefers playing a bad boy saying, “I think the bad boy is more funk.”
  • He said that he had a good time working with Addison and Jeremy.
  • Lauren Kate is Team Cam. That’s really a great question. She said that she was totally Team Cam.

Guys, better watch the edited video that I made! You would love it! There’s a mixture of love, laughter and teary-eyed moments. Lauren Kate is so kind and humble.

Below is the video of the Question and Answer of Lauren Kate and Harrison Gilbertson!

Book Review: The Universe of Us by Lang Leav

29431081It so happens that I was looking for a light and easy to read when I came across with Universe of Us by Lang Leav. I have high expectations for this book since I was an avid reader of her works. And this book looks like, failed my expectations. I couldn’t get connected with her feelings for the first part of the poetry. However, there are lines that really carved and made me notice and realize that it was painful for me to take.

It was good but I don’t think it was enough for me to feel the pain in compare with her books, Love and Misadventure and Lullabies. I love the two books to the point that I had to stop because the words are making my heart aches which leads to my conclusion that I don’t like The Universe of Us that much.

I commend some lines that inflicted a little bit pain but it wasn’t enough to be connected with the book. I apologize but it looks like this fourth book was not meant for me. I see poems falling apart, being lonely, being alone and left by a lover, being contented and happy but it didn’t give justice to what the other readers are saying about this book. Well, at least I admire the last part half of this book because it was actually better than the first half.

Anyway, here are some quotes that piqued my interest:

  • I would take your hand in mine and tell you, if only you had let me, his is how much I could have loved you
  • The second I tried to tell myself I wasn’t in love was the moment I realized I was
  • “Some people don’t know what they have until it’s gone.” “But what about the ones who do know? The ones who never took a damn thing for granted? Who tried their hardest to hold on, yet could only look on helplessly while they lost the thing they loved the most.” “Isn’t it so much worse for them?”
  • “The sad thing is,” she said, “the moment you start to miss someone, it means they’re already gone.”
  • I loved you once and now I must spend my whole life explaining why.
  • “You think falling in love is about holding on, but it isn’t. It is about hands gripping the edge of the world and letting go, one finger at a time.”

Book Review: No Holding Back by Kate Evangelista

no-holding-back-theheartofabookbloggerThe only words that I could think of to summarize No Holding Back by Kate Evangelista are innocence and tease! I have read No Love Allowed which is the first book and I could confidently say that No Holding Back has a lot of improvement in terms of writing style. I was so immersed in reading No Holding Back that I’m not even aware what time is it when I was closely in the end. And at the end, it looks like I enjoyed it more than I expected.

Let’s talk about Preston and Nathan. Apparently, I am both relatable to the two. One who is so inclined that doesn’t even think about the love aspect of life — is so me. I was so inclined on pursuing my dreams and to be in a relationship with books. On the other hand, the other one is an event planner. I was once in a student council. So, I know how it works to organize a full-scale event. And I tell you, Eleanor is scaaaaaaaaaaary! (That escalated, quickly) Like, she is the oldest hag that you will encounter in real life and she’s like looking at you, intimidating, commanding you with her words. I applaud Ms. Kate here because she nailed back1writing Eleanor’s character!

The thing is I like how Kate Evangelista builds the characters of the Preston and Nate. They both have different personalities and it seems that they balanced each other out. It is kind of unique because when the two of them are in a scene, I couldn’t get it off in my mind that they are perfect being together. It feels like I’m also on a  tour with them while they stroll, eat food and had their time while reading. I just wish I could go to Europe. Let’s add this to my bucket list.

No Holding Back feels like an introduction on what we will see on the third book or what will happen to Natasha’s story. I think, I could see a little glimpse of that story but that’s one of the things that I am getting excited for! I’ve been wanting to know what happened back2to her and what kind of story that she has. Caleb and Didi also appeared in this book and they doing great. I kind of wanting more of their story. No, scratch that. I’m going to be selfish here, I kind of wanting more of the everyone’s story. I don’t want their story to end yet.

It feels like I want more of Preston and Nathan because of that ending! Holy Guacamole! That’s what you called a major cliffhanger and a major tease! Anyway, what was I like about this book is that it tackles LGBT or same-sex relationships which are being discriminated or most of the time in our country (Philippines). I commend Ms. Kate for having the courage to write this kind of book. I hope that this kind of story doesn’t have a huge negative impact on the society and I also hope that people have an open mind to read this kind of novel.back3

What I learn from No Holding Back is that love can have a lot of definitions – It could be love why the people you love the most is putting a wall between you two, maybe it is for you to keep on focusing attaining your dreams or just someone who is staying on your side is enough or you don’t even know it but appreciation is the least that she could offer but she loves you. There’s many forms of love and Ms. Kate Evangelista just gave her readers more than just one love. That’s what I like about her. She keeps on loving.

For International Readers, you could purchase your book on The Book Depository!

5752810When Kate Evangelista was told she had a knack for writing stories, she did the next best thing: entered medical school. After realizing she wasn’t going to be the next Doogie Howser, M.D., Kate wandered into the Literature department and never looked back. Today, she is a graduate of De La Salle University – Manila with a Bachelor of Arts in Literature. She taught high school English for three years and was an essay consultant for two. Currently, she writes full-time and is based in the Philippines.

Book Review: The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon

Huge thanks to Penguin Random House for sending me a review copy of The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon and Thank you too to  JM from Revelations of a Book Freak for sharing my feels with this book!

28763485Timeless. Scientific. Destiny. Coincidence. And Fate. This book brings the little butterflies in my stomach within the time span of 24 hours. I love how Nicola Yoon creates her characters with these unique personalities that will mend and harmonize with the other character’s personality. She gives us a wide diverse perspective on love, that love is not for those who are only in the same races, or in the same culture or sharing the same tradition. Love is skeptical. It can be everywhere. It can be on anyone.

How could you imagine where everything you do has a meaning? Like, you are being late because someone you used to know stumbled upon you and you had a disaster on your supposed to be appointment, then before you know it, you are hating your day without knowing that without those events, you wouldn’t meet an outstanding and sincere someone that could change your life, your decision and even perspective in love?

star1That’s what happened to Natasha. A girl who believe only on scientific way of living, where chemistry is being produced by serotonin to dopamine and a mixture of what people called attraction, lust and then love without knowing that those elements are factors to some feelings that you couldn’t explain. Nicola Yoon collides two characters with the element of time, destinies and fate all in once.

She entranced and believe that every action leads to another action whether it would be good or bad, if it is meant to happen, it will happen. You wouldn’t just know when or how or why because the things that really have a great impact on your life are the events that you didn’t see coming that will come along the way. And that’s how Nicola Yoon perfected the art of writing by exuding and executing an exemplary and star-2unbelievable story that will touch its reader’s heart.

Honestly, I was going to give this book between 3.5 stars to 4 stars when I was reading it. I am no way halfway on the book nor finishes it yet. And I am glad that I give the book a chance and finished it till the end. I was expecting that there will be a profound, outstanding happily ever after but Nicola Yoon gives us a glimpse of what life is about and what could happen or the consequences of every person’s action when they choose love at some point of time.

What I learned from this book is that no matter what kind of decision you choose from hereafter, if it is meant to be, it is meant to be. Unless, otherwise, you make it happen for yourself and the universe will all be fixated and transcendence your will to make it star3happen. A person’s life is full of mysteries and surprises, you don’t know what the world has to offer and what would you become.

The Sun Is Also A Star offers a huge realization when it comes to the philosophical way of living. It gives you hope, love, courage, and most of all, it gives you magic within yourself. Nicola Yoon brought us a diverse kind of story, you may hate the story, you may like the story or you may not feel the story. But I will tell you this, The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon is magical. It may not give the day they want for love but it will give you a lifetime to love yourself back and find yourself within the number of years. And when you are ready, you will soon find your love again. It will find you.
